Local, National and International Collaborations

The Hughes Laboratory is part of the Spinal Cord Group based within The Centre for Neuroscience at the University of Glasgow. Our research focuses on the role of the spinal cord in sensory function. We use a number of different techniques, including immunocytochemistry, confocal and electron microscopy, electrophysiology, behavioural assessment, chemogentics and optogenetics, to research the spinal circuitry that underlies sensations such as pain, touch and itch.

The Hughes Laboratory enjoys several productive collaborations with leading groups both nationally and internationally. The longest-serving collaboration is with

Brett Graham (University of Newcastle, Australia).

Our work has resulted in the publication of several key research papers on the role of spinal interneurons and projection neurons in the perception of touch, acute pain

and pathological pain.
